That's a second type, Pattern 1888 Mk1. /|\ over WD is War Department, the famous 'crows foot' property mark, the next mark is a view mark for Wilkinson. The X signifies that it has passed the 'bend test'. The 1897 is probably a weapon number as these were issued matched to a rifle.
