You get the gold band on promotion to Major, I'm not sure how many more ranks after that wear it until it changes again - probably different from Brig upwards.

Gold edged peak for ranks of major and lieut. colonel, that is , except for cavalry and Guards regiments, where all officers have gold edged peaks.
