Pathfinder or Cap Badge?

Hi guys!
I picked this up thinking that it's a cap badge. But knowing less than -0- about them wondered if it might be a Pathfinder badge as to my untrained I they're somewhat similiar.
There's a mm J.R. Gaunt (?).
Whatever it is, it looks like the catch was repaired?

Would appear to be the badge from a RAF service cap. I have no idea of era but an sure someone more knowledgeable will give their opinion soon. As an aside J Gaunt was a prolific manufacturer of British cap badges and insignia. Just checked my old cap badge from the late 80's and J R Gaunt made that as well.

Hi Greg,

The badge you have looks to me it could well be of wartime manufacture with period repair. However, given the eagles used in the manufacture of these badges were also made well after the war it can be difficult to be tell.

The Pathfinder badge was the same as the eagle used for the officers peak and side cap badge. They were made by several manufacturers including JR Gaunt who was a prolific manufacturer of this badge. I have seen these badges with a variety of fixings including a broach pin, twin screwback fixings and prongs.

As to whether this badge was worn by a Pathfinder, we can never be certain as they were also worn as collar badges by nurses attached to the RAF and also sold as sweetheart badges for civilian wear.

What you have is certainly old and quite likely to be wartime IMHO - but it is difficult to be totally certain.
