    DSO Conversion Advice Please!!!

    All,

Some expert guidance requested if you will. I have a Victorian DSO I am considering for sale, unattributed. The order is in excellent condition except the top bar is missing. I also purchased a case for the order that is likely a WW I or II era case (I am not expert enough). What is your feeling about having the order converted with GV top and bottom bars to make it complete? Is there any value added to leaving it alone with missing top bar? If converted with GV bars, shall I leave the original Victoria cipher or replace that as well? I am concerned with the last question as to the affect on value of a Victorian piece with GV bars vice a completely converted piece to GV altogether. I would of course advertise it as converted and explain the circumstances. Any guidance and advice is appreciated.

I would personally say: Leave it as is and don't tamper with it. That said, if you fix it up you could probably sell it for more, assuming it is done properly using all original stuff.

If you "fix" a Victorian DSO by making it a GV DSO, you "fix" yourself out of about $450 in value. You also make it more difficult to sell/trade later on.

You'll do better to leave it alone.

Hi Tony, please follow the good advice from the other forum members and leave it as it is!

        Cheers, Ade.

          Gentlemen

Thanks very much for your advice. I will certainly take it and run. What are your feelings about the non period case I am housing it in with regards to how I value it when advertised? Does it add to, decrease from (because it is not period), or have no impact at all. Thanks again, much appreciated

            A side note gents,

This is what motivated me to move the DSO. I just won but am in the process of paying it so I attached the link vice posting the gentleman's pictures directly. Couldn't help it...

The non-period case should not detract too much from the asking price. It's better to have it housed in one than a PVC wallet. Alternatively, sell the case seperately. Just advertise it for what it is, and don't fiddle with its aesthetics.
