That particular badge (Introduced in 1923) is usually incorrectly identified, as it was introduced after the 5th Wellington Regiment was renamed the "1st Battalion Wellington Regiment" as of September 1921.
The name was changed again on the 1st June 1923 to just the "Wellington Regiment"
On the 19th August the "Wellington Regiment" was awarded the title of "City of Wellington's Own."
The earlier pre 1923 '5th Wellington Regiment' badge did not have the scrolls below the crown.

That's interesting to know, the reference I used (I beleive from the 1920's)depicts the badge with scrolls below the crown and states "5th Wellington Regiment" and makes reference to them being part of the Samoan Expeditionary Force.
If the reference you used was the poster by the artist "D Moule Del" which was published by the Government Life Insurance Office (Records state at the Turnball Library it being published circa 1919)
Then yes your information (Poster) is incorrect.
I posted the following a few years ago, so some of the pictures are no longer viewable, but shows my information to be correct.

I missed out the year, it should read-
On the 19th August 1938 the "Wellington Regiment" was awarded the title of "City of Wellington's Own."

Hi Brent,
Yes that was the source of the information, couldn't find Corbett's book at short notice (assuming it is correctly described in there) Thanks for putting me right on that point,I wasnt disputing your information at all just pointing out that a period (or thought to be) reference depicts scrolled badges.
If that is the case the poster must be a later production than 1919 as it depicts the badges with scrolls?????
