Medal Question

This is one for probably Tony or Chris. I have two medals, GEO V DCM and a GEO V Meritorious Service, impressed on the rim in block letters SPECIMEN (K/4396).
The style of lettering conforms to awarded pieces. They are silver, proper diameter and weight, etc. Definately not reproductions. My question would be what does the K/4396 mean

It's probably a mint batch number - not for issue. Unusual. That's the most logical thing I can think of. Piccies?
