Help with lanyard please

Can anyone tell me who would have worn a white lanyard is it anything to do with the Roughriders and does anyone know the purpose of the second item which is a coarse string .Thanks Roger

The second is a lanyard for a pocket knife WWII British or Canadian

Many thanks Nico this came from the son of a man who was City of London yeomanry (Roughriders) which was amalgamated with the Honourable Artillery Company to form 11th Brigade Battery Royal horse Artillery so your reply fits .Regards Roger
