This type of backing is quite common on many "padded" British insignia. Your wings look quite early, possibly even pre WW2.

Dama, that is a nice set of wings. I've got a set of triplets just like it.....these are more likely wartime pieces than prewar.

Canadian-made wings!

If I am not totally misinformed, this is a Canadian-made wing (wartime). Apparently a whole bunch of unissued wings of this type were found a couple of years ago, and they still show up for sale from time to time. I have a pair too, and they are truly lovely!

Mikael You are correct, these are likely Canadian Made. One of the best looking RAF pieces IMO
