Dieppe & Hong Kong Bar.
Does this look like an original bar. No other pictures. Crimped on ribbon -
None of these are 'original' per se. The only thing that should be on such a medal is the overseas service clasp. I don't know whether these (1994) Dieppe clasps are officially recognised or not, but I wouldn't lose sleep either way.Comment

Dieppe Bar & Hong Kong Bar
Tony, I know there have been original issued. I have two friends, one who has the Maple Leaf bar and Hong Kong bar (with Winnipeg Grenediers) and one who has Dieppe Bar with Maple Leaf bar (Cameron Highlanders). Both received the bars from Canadian Government in small envelope. The Dieppe bar was instituted by PC 1994-1154 on July 4,1994. The Hong Kong bar was instituted by PC 1995-1244 on July 26,1995. I have seen one repo with a squeeze pin at the back. I don't know if the originals has a bar at the back like the Maple Leaf bar or only half bars at the back.(Pressing on the bar should hold it on the ribbon. I have a feeling these are a new copy, though I'm not sure. Next Nov.11th I will have a closer look at my friends bar and medals. Tho the originals will be hard to come by the asking price is $200.00 which to me is getting ridiculus. Same as the Battle of Britian Bar, up to near $300.00 now. Thanks for your input Tony.Comment

Hong Kong & Dieppe Bars

I don't think the Canadians who died at Hong Kong or at the Commando Raid at Dieppe are losing sleep. The soldiers that came back fought with the Canadian Government for years trying to get some recognition for these battles they fought and as you see they were finally recognized. Many were in Japanese and German POW camps for years. My ship escorted a bunch of Canadians coming back from Japan and they looked in no better shape than those in the concintation camps. They earned every bar they received and you had better believe it.Comment

Dieppe Clasp
Hi Ed. My CVSM with Dieppe Clasp is a good one and it looks exactly like the one in the 'Government Official Photo' that you have posted. On the back, it has two wrap-around keepers similar to the o/s clasp, and it has a pin in the centre to secure it to the ribbon. In addition, it is lightly stitched through the anchor ring at the top to keep it from 'disappearing'.
There are a couple of notable differences between my clasp and the one in the scan that you are questioning: The texture of the issued clasp is noticably rougher (not polished, like the sample that you show, nor like the o/s clasp), and the width of the bottom of the issued clasp is wide enough that the wrap-around keeper do not compress the width of the ribbon. I would guess that the one in your sample scan is a third-party production.
Check-out this eBay auction for one that I would consider to be worth the $35 that you can pay to any medal mounting shop. Unfortunately, some poor sea dog has just paid almost $150 for it.

No offence meant Ed. I'm just not too familiar with these (as they're pretty recent). Copies (of all kinds) are coming hot off the press before even the originals have finished being issued, eg. Iraq Medals. I was aware of the Dieppe clasp (although I didn't realise they were govt. issue), but not the Hong Kong variety.
There's so much tat about now that one has to keep current. I'm obviously not as up to speed as I thought. Again, no offence meant - I'll get the beers in for anyone who survived the Dieppe fiasco, or any FEPOW for that matter!

Dieppe Bar
Resaw, I do believe this is a new copy. My picture was of the same one on E/bay. I was suspicious of it because same lady dealer has a Hong Kong bar and miniature HK bar for auction. The bidding was also a little suspicious. After I questioned her she wrote that it was not a repo (as most dealers would). That medal & bar went for over $200.00 Canadian. This sounds like the ACE all over. Thanks for the comments

Interesting thread. The Dieppe and Hong Kong clasps to the CVSM are found in several permutations as well as the original issued pieces. Quality on the issue items is not very good and copies tend to follow suit for the most part, although I have seen what I assume to be jeweller-made examples that are somewhat better.
Sadly I don't have any to show at the moment but will see what I can dig up locally for further study.
I know the seller of that one you spotted on ebay, Ed, so will ask him where he got this example next time I see him. And by the way I'll take as many original "Battle of Britain" bars to the 1939-45 Star at $300 as you can find!

CVSM bars
It will be interesting what the dealer says. I must admit I was tempted to bid on these bars as they looked good, but two bars for sale at the same time plus a miniature HK made me uneasy. Here's a link I got from a dealer. He had a ACE group for sale.

I have confirmed that the HK bar to the CVSM that was listed on ebay is in fact an original example. I may be able to get my hands on one in the near future, and if I do will be happy to provide detailed images of the obverse and reverse.
Will also inquire whether any Dieppe clasps may also be available.
