    0pinions needed on revolver.

I would be grateful for opinions and advice on this revolver as I have very little knowledge of firearms. I attach some pics.
    Thanks,
    Peter.

It is a .38 calibre Enfield service revolver.

Is it deactivated, and if so are the chambers able to take dummy rounds?

Thanks Segfried. It is deactivated, but I'm not sure if the chambers will take dummy rounds. I will try and find out. As far as I am aware, guns of this type have to be deactivated in the UK in order to put them on the market. I am told that deactivation lowers the value of weapons, but without this they cannot be sold in this country. Have you any idea of its value?
        Thanks,
        Peter.

This is the best that I can do with the photograph. As you may have guessed, I do not have this piece in hand, but am considering purchasing it at an auction.
            Thanks,
            Peter

You are correct, but there are two types of deactivation in Britain, known colloquially as Old-spec (pre-1995) and New-spec (post-1995).

The basic difference is that you can do far more with old-specs, such as partially strip, chamber rounds etc whereas new-spec are basically welded shut and just lumps of metal.
New-specs are worth maybe 25% less than old-spec.
Deacs in general doesn't necessarily mean less value - because of the draconian gun laws in the UK very few people have pistol licences, and there the demand for live pistols isn't very great, whereas anyone can own a deac and are therefore more saleable. As to value I would guess at £200-300.00 depending on the level of deactivation (with the deac cert) as it's a fairly common pistol which was mass produced, unless there is something unusual about it or it has provenance etc.

Very interesting Seigfried, I was curious as I have a couple of Mauser 1914 pistols in my collection with the same markings. These things sure get about
As for the Revolver, Its not very clear from the photos but it appears to me the deact stamp reads 94, making it an early spec.

Thanks John for explaining the different types of deactivation and for giving me an idea of value and Tobysauer for your opinion on the deactivation date. Interesting that you have a couple of Mausers with the same mark. If this was a service issue revolver would you expect to see the usual crows foot mark somewhere?
                    Thanks,
                    Peter.

I am told that it does have the crows foot mark and that the chambers can be loaded. This fits in with the pre 1995 deactivation referred to by you John.
                      Thanks,
                      Peter.

Nice to see one that is not modified Peter, personally I would have it re-blued before putting it on display.

Thanks Luc. What do you think would be a reasonable price for it without a holster?
                          Thanks,

Confused over this double-posted thread. Now Seigfried has quoted a value of $300 - $450 (Sterling conversion) for what is essentially a paperweight. Do you mean to say that if I can buy working models for $200 cash over here, render them unusable, then I can ship them to you and double my money? We may have uncovered a whole new source of revenue!.

There are two threads with identical titles and authors. You are right about the paperweights. Not many of us ove rhere have pistol licences so there is no market for them. They aremuch more valuable as deacs as the market is vast in comparison. If your weapons are deactivated to UK spec send them to me and I'll sell them for you!
