What did the British WWII soldiers carry instead a Wehrpass / Soldbuch?

Hello. I'd be very thankful if someone could tell me what document the British soldiers had in WWII instead of a Wehrpass / Soldbuch.

Legend has it that the first pay book for British soldiers was designed, or at least approved by the Duke of Wellington and the sample issued to each unit for instructional purposes bore the name "Thomas Atkins", from which came the nickname "Tommies" for the troops, an improvement on many of the things they were called before that!
