Would you have any knowledege of suggested books for allied tunics during WW2? We know of many books for the dress of the Wehrmacht. However, allied material is difficult due to interest.

Militaria Magazine has good reference material, if you read French.

Canadian Tunics
The definitive book on Canadian tunics from pre-First World War to modern is 'Drab Serge and Khaki Drill: The Foreign Service, Universal Service, Battle and Combat Dress Jackets of the Canadian Army, 1899-2003', by Grant Tyler
There are others, such as:
- 'Canuck: Clothing and Equipping the Canadian Soldier 1939-1945', by Michael Dorosh
- 'Dressed to Kill', by Michael Dorosh
- 'Canadian Forces in World War II' from Men at Arms Series #359
- 'The Canadian Army at War' from Men at Arms Series #164
and the previously mentioned 'The Canadian Solder 1944-45', by Jean Bouchery
Enjoy!

Hi ObltKG4. Yes the other two books are more comprehensive than the Men At Arms series, which are really just an introduction. The author has used black and white pictures of reenactors wearing authentic kit for many of the illustrations, and has done a good job with descriptions. For the person looking for all the details, though, the Drab Serge and Khaki Drill is the best resource, if you can find it. It has been out of print for a while, and I have recently seen copies sell in the $100 range.
As for David Gordon's books on the Uniforms of the WWII Tommy, and his other book on Equipment of the WWII Tommy, they are good reference books on British uniforms and equipment, but not really focused on the other Commonwealth countries stuff.
If you haven't been to the Canuck website, canadiansoldiers.com you might want to give it a try. The author of the other two books is the owner of that site.

Resaw

Hi Resaw, thanks for yor suggestions and advise.
Just picked up Canuck Vol. 1 : Clothing and Equipping the Canadian Soldier 1939-1945 for 20 pounds used. I understand Michael Dorosh will be republishing his work with an expanded color format.
Would you tell me if this volume covers Canadian 2nd division or corps in the Western European theatre? Really the gist of my search.
Best,

"Dressed to Kill" is a fair supplement to any of the 'beginner' books but is too short and covers such a wide field that it is frustrating at times: mentions items of dress or where/when they were worn but doesn't go into detail. Tantilizing or frustrating depending on your temperament - one step up from the Men-At-Arms level.
I'm Canadian and used to know the WWII stuff - 3o years agio and more. Bought "dressed to kill" to aid my aging memory and as a quick reference for discussions like the ones on this forum but found that on many items it offered just enough info. to whet my appetite but not enough to answer my questions. I'm not familiar with Dorosh' book but it sounds more comprehensive.

Hi ObltKG4. Unfortunately, none of the reference books I have listed will give you exactly what you are looking for (2nd Canadian Div, in Western theatre). The book 'The Canadian Soldier, 1944-45 (From D-Day to VE-Day)' by Jean Bouchery will be a better reference for you. I think Happy Hessian mentioned this book in an earlier posting. It covers a lot more than just uniforms, badges and patches, as it goes into tanks, aircraft, etc., but the photos in the book are impressively clear.

Thanks all for your contributions/posts.
Appreciated.
Resaw, I've ordered Jean Bouchery's book at the bookstore today.
Ultimately, I'm looking for 39-45 comprehensive book for the 2nd and will start with mid '44 to end of war with Bouchery's work. If you know pre '44 literature, pls let me know.
Peter, does Dressed to Kill offer anything?
Regards,
