Hallmarked for Birmingham, presumably the Edinburgh mark is a retailer. The Ribbon clasp is also fully hallmarked.

        Hi Simon

That was my fist thought, with the heart motif, but a bit elaborate for a sweetheart piece. Bit big too, its 30mm wide, 48mm tall. Most sweetheart brooches are "cheap and cheerful" rather than expensive hallmarked silver.

I think from the hallmark (Anchor, Lion "X") that it is 1922 at the latest. Of course the cycle repeats every 26/25 years so its difficult to be sure, could be earlier.

Belongs to a friend. I said I'd ask around for him in case anyone recognised it.

          Gordon,

Although I've never seen this particular medal before it reminds me of other regimental awards I've seen that were awarded for sport/shooting competitions of some sort. These were often fairly elaborate and often struck in sterling. Perhaps this one was never awarded as I would expect the reverse to be engraved with the date and name or recipient as well as the type of competition it was awarded for.

I agree that it seems a bit "fancy" for a sweetheart, and these were seldom issued on a ribbon. The heart motif, I suspect has a connection to the regiment itself rather than a romantic meaning.

          Cheers,

          Adam
