BRITISH NAVY COMMANDO ISSUED CAMOUFLAGE PARKA.
An exceptionally rare and intriguing item of camouflage, this is the second such jacket we have ever seen in this configuration and the item is something of a mystery to collectors, however much research of photographs and of similar garments have led us to the following conclusion:- The garments designed for Airborne forces, which eventually became the famous Denison smock, were originally made from a high quality tight gabardine windproof type cloth, these were a Air Ministry item of clothing. These were given to high ranking officers of the Airborne forces and have erroneously become known as the officers pattern Denison. An original example can be seen in the Pegasus Museum at Pegasus Bridge in Normandy where one is on display and one can clearly see an Air Ministry label and the knitted cuffs as well as the very different camouflage cloth. The particular item that we have been lucky enough to obtain is in fact made from the same cloth and is a heavy weight reversible to white Parka, this is clearly influenced by the German equivalent, however it is very much a British garment. The camouflage finish is as with the early Denison smocks a rather sweeping watery looking colour. This garment has four press stud pockets and brown woollen cuffs which have faded to a salmon pink colour. There are large buttons throughout. The windproof cloth is a little faded as one would expect through use, however the camouflage is still good and distinctive. There are many Denison-like features including a tail piece, woollen cuffs and press studs, it is a strongly held belief that these are an experimental garment that was produced for an aborted airborne raid upon Norway to destroy German industrial plants. These smocks seem to have found their way to the Royal Navy Commando units and particularly 30 AU Commando. The garment itself was recently purchased on Ebay and with the item was a long hose naval issue gas mask with a name tag to the tube reading 'C.Whistler OS' (presumably ordinary seaman) and the religion of C of E. The smock was also in this man's possession and was sold on through inheritance. We have contacted a very good web site and it is confirmed by the site's author that Whistler was indeed a member of this unit. He has also provided us with a facsimile of an excellent wartime photo showing Naval Commandos and Marines stood in front of an armoured vehicle, one can very clearly see this jacket in use, it is a long mid length garment with large buttons to the interior, these clearly show the white lining which is shown in the photograph, there is a large collar tightening tab. The two naval officers wear green battledress, however with naval caps with green covers, Commando titles can be seen to one man's battledress. Interestingly the hood of the Parka is shaped very much like an early flying helmet and has a slight peak to the front and there are clear bulbous areas tailored to fit over headphones. This again would certainly lead us to believe that this is a purpose made garment, possibly for parachutists, however there could be the possibility they were designed for glider pilots to be worn over the flying helmet for cold weather flying. This garment is as yet very difficult to find information upon, however it is clear that with further research one could uncover more interesting information about these mysterious garments.
