Have you looked at it under a black light? That will give you some idea as to the age of it. It might even reveal some more secrets. Just an idea.

Had and old 'Sparks' friend of my Dad have a look at the pic and he said it is most likely a
'Tesla receiving transformer'
Add a battery to terminal and it should 'spark' if someone was transmitting to it.
