    Airborne Rifle Valsie

    A protective case for the Lee Enfield service rifle, made of heavy green felt. It had a canvass attachment to the parachute harness and let down rope. It was intended to be used instead of the leg bag.

    Can someone on the other side of the pond translate the markings on this please?

    I understand the 44th A/B and the REME (TA) but what does the 'w/shops' mean?

    Regards

        Thanks Seebee1 but why would this valise be marked to a 'work shop'? Is there a special meaning to work shop? Is a work shop similar to an American 'Company'? What does a work shop do in an AB operation? Is it a maintenance company?

        Regards,
        Steve T

          R.E.M.E = Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers
          T.A = Territorial Army

          Each regiment has R.E.M.E soldiers attached to it. They form a "workshop," which is called a Light Aid Detachment if they are supporting at the front line. There, they repair the units equipment.
