Stunning British Group

Hi all,

A friend of mine asked me to take a look at some medals that his Aunt had given him. He says they look really tatty and he was about to have them all remounted and a new case!! Needless to say I put a stop to that....

The group is to Lt Col Edward Lake-Geere and consists of L to R:

All together a stunning group, and with the minis too looks super!! I have told him that it will need insuring and have suggested a figure of £3000 (would you agree?) Also any help in the research would be very much appreciated.

The 1922 army list only has him with only 3 clasps DoL, Eland and OFS and no mention of either Sudans, the 1924 list has him with six clasps as mentioned in your post but still no Sudans,

He served with Kitcheners fighting scouts in the South African war (Lake E Geere AO440 4/11/01 Lieutenant 1KFS 01/09/1901 resigned 20/2/03 AO535 26/4/02)

What a grouping , as Gary said £3000 is a good amount. Does your friend have anything else relating to the man?

Not wishing to put down the group but £3000 is a bit steep, I would half that, no gallantry did not command a regiment in action and no foreign awards. good solid group but unlikely to appeal to the regimental collector, that said KFS is an excellent unit and collectable

I agree, 3000 pounds is way too much for what is just a long service group. Also, shouldn't he have been awarded the Queen's Sudan Medal?

Only if he was with a British unit and It looks like he served in the Sudanese/Egyptian army, the clasp "Talodi" (may to june 1906) was only issued to 12th Sudanese infantry regiment, interesting the second (1910) Sudan medal clasp S.Kordofan was also issued to the "12th SIR".

The naming should be in arabic on both the medals?

I have a view that he was an adventurer with an interesting story

I realise this is an old thread but have read it with much interest as I collect medals to the Egyptian Army. On first looking him up alarm bells were ringing as I could not find either of his Egyptian Army Medals on the rolls, below is what I have found on him.

Regards to all, Brian.

Served with Kitcheners fighting scouts in the South African war (Lake E Geere) AO440 4th November 1901, Lieutenant 1 KFS 1st September 1901. Resigned 20th February 1903. AO535 26/4/02).

Edward Geere-Lake, Gent, late Lieutenant Kitchener's Fighting Scouts, is granted the temporary rank of Lieutenant in the Army (Infantry) whilst employed with the Remount Department. Dated 3rd May, 1902.

4th Battalion Border Regiment Lieutenant 15th November 1902.
To 3rd Battalion from late 4th Battalion, Captain 12th July 1908.
3rd Battalion Border regiment (Reserve – Regular Army); the battalion remained in the UK supplying drafts to the Regular Army Battalions overseas

Ceased to belong to the Reserve of Officers due to age 10th June 1930, retained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Died on the 5th August 1940 Witham, Essex.

Lieutenat Colonel Edward Lake-Geere did service attached to the Egyptian Army and included in his group of medals is a Khedives 1896 Sudan Medal with clasp TALODI. The Talodi operations took place between 25th May and 17th June 1906, therefore he would Not have been awarded or entitled to a Queens Sudan medal which was awarded for actions during the re-conquest of the Sudan between 1896 and 1898.

He also has in the group a Khedives Sudan 1910 Medal with clasp S.KORDOFAN.
This medal and clasp was awarded for operations between 10th November and 19th December 1910. The operations consisted of two patrols, first the Rahad Patrol under the command of El Lewa Assar Pasha which operated in the Eastern Gebels District. The second, The Dilling Patrol, undr the command of El Kaimakam Conroy Bey, which operated in the Katla Hills, Dilling District.

Bimbashi Lake-Geere (as his local rank would have been) is not on the medal roll for the 1910 medal and clasp S. Kordofan, but found attached to the roll is a letter which states:

Sirdar, Egyptian Army

To: The Secretary, War Office London.

Sir I have the Honour to forward herewith a silver medal for the operations in Southern Kordofan 1910, for Captain, E. Lake-Geere formerly of the Slave Repression Corps and until recently employed with the Irrigation Department of the Egyptian Government.
This Officer I am informed has lately left Egypt to be with his Battalion, and left the following address: The Manor House Wanstead Essex England. But as his whereabouts is known by your office I would be glad if you could arrange for the medal to be delivered safely.

He is also not on the roll for the Talodi Clasp on the Khedives 1896 medal which only lists 7 British Officers, but as we see from these medal Rolls, they are by no means extant as Officers, Political, Civil and attached to other Departments served in operations but were not added to the rolls.

We may never be able to confirm the Khedives Sudan 1896 medal as ever being awarded to Lt Colonel Lake-Geere, but we do know he was serving attached to the Egyptian Army just at the right time and the medal is for sure period mounted as seen in the photo.

One last note: The Khedive 1896 medal to British Officers or other ranks was only ever regimentally engraved or impressed in English it was not named in Arabic.
The Khedives Sudan Medal 1910 was issued unnamed but some 2nd type medals are found officially impressed to British Officers and other ranks in sans serif capitals. R.A.F. Medals were officially impressed.

Insurance value is higher than actual retail value or so I have heard watching Antiques Roadshow from the UK. I heard the appraiser quote a retail value on an item then say for insurance purposes double the value
