    M.M. Somme award.

I've recently purchased this M.M. group to William, Henry, Tidman of the Monmouthshire Regiment

The unusual thing about the group is the battalion number on the M.M.

Tidman won his M.M. whilst serving with the 1st Battalion L.G. 1/9/1916 but the M.M. has been altered to the 4th Battalion.

The 4th Battalion was a training Battalion stationed here in the UK and raised in 1917. Could he have been wounded and sent back to the UK to set up the Battalion?
The War and Victory are impressed with the rank of A/W.O.cl 2.

With the medals are a North Midland Division card dated 5th August 1916, with a piece of M.M. ribbon attached to it.

My educated guess is that this is a first day of the Somme award for digging communication trenches at Gommecourt, alongside the attacking troops under very heavy machine gun ,rifle and shellfire.

Another addition is his Sergeant's Mess Membership Card to the 1st Battalion.

Regarding the recipient's occupation, he is listed on the 1911 census as being a weighbridge clerk at the docks in Newport, Monmouthshire (so being a local man to the 1st Battalion).

    Many thanks,Gareth

Regarding the award for the Somme it has been confirmed by one of the senior members of the "British Medal Forum"

                  All the best, Gareth
