    Tracing British WW2 Officers Records

    Hi All

I've been asked to look into tracing a WW2 British Officers records for a friend. I have no idea how to go about this as British is not my thing! LOL

Can anyone advise the best way to do this, I have his name, rank, serial No and unit?

    Cheers Mike

    Mike,

I am not sure if the WW2 records have been released on line yet. Most of the WW1 have been. Unless it is a relative you may be struggling at the moment.

I`ll make some enquiries and get back to you

    Jim

I can find some basic information for you if you PM me the name.

Unless your friend is a blood relative then \I am afraid there are no records available to the public for the time being.

The London Gazette should give details of promotions and decorations.

        http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/search

Try picking "World War II" from the historic events and then enter the service number in field labelled "With all the words".

If the surname is unusual you could repeat the process with the name in place of the number. I wouldn't bother if the chap was called Smith !

I've also had some success by Googling the name - you sometimes find other people have been doing research for family trees etc.

        Good hunting.

        Regards

        Richie
