    Badge Question

I recently aquired a smallish collection of WW1 period badges. There are two versions of both the Black Watch and A&S glengarry badges. One is the standard lug & pin the other has a horizontal roller catch pinback. My question is what is the pinback badge for?
    Thanks in advance,
    Garth

The two badges with the roller catch pins are unfortunately fake. The other two appear to be genuine however.
Brooch pin fasteners are sometimes encountered on British cap badges, usually intended as sweetheart badges, but sometimes done by soldiers as replacements for broken sliders or lugs. They are of an entirely different design than that shown on the badges here however. They were never used on OR's badges as issued. Note that both the pin back badges are also poor strikes and not of the same quality as the other two.

Thanks you pretty well confirm what I suspected.

Brooch pin Scottish badges are often found, I've never seen a roller catch but we never say never do we?

The Argyll's badge actually looks OK apart from the red. If it's paint, strip it out, it was my Dad's regiment and I've never seen or heard of this in 40+ years of collecting. The pin is well high and makes me wonder.

Obviously the best test is in the hand but I'd not be hasty to bin either of these.
