    Old British Flag

I recently picked up this nice old British flag...it looks hand made but some of the stitching looks machine done....the "capture" tag reads "British flag I found in a bombed house in Foy/Fay? France 1945"...size is approximately 30"X24"....back side shows stitching and workmanship, the center red stripes are very large, does anybody have any idea as to age/era or purpose.....thanks.....mike

Le Fay is in Eastern France an area that is unlikely to have seen British activity. The flag looks like a civilian attempt to copy the Union Jack and you will see these and hand made Stars and Stripes as well as Soviet handmades in photos of French civilians welcoming allied troops to liberated towns and villages. This is my guess.

Obviously a home-made item. For what purpose? It might date back to the 14-18 war, or could have been hastily knocked up in anticipation of the allied invasion as a 'please don't blow this house up' recognition panel. If the latter, then it obviously didn't work.

          Hello TF:
Whoever made it never likely saw a real UK flag, based on
the separated George cross arms, and centered St. Pat arm
positions. Has lots of loose threads on the back, so would be
easy to burn test for age evaluation, i.e., hard black ball on
burned thread end means material is post WW2 synthetic,
thread wicks to ash then more likely 1945 or before IMO.

I agree, i think the civilian made theory for ID or Victory liberation is most likely...very interesting flag though!......thanks......mike

The Fay might well be Foy....as in St Foy?...i just googled it and its more in the Southern part of France?....on the tag the "O" or "A" is kind of scribbled so hard to tell.......mike
