    Badges I found.....what?

Still cleaning up in the basement, and I found a few more things (this isn't all....more later). I would like to know what they are, and if they are anything....most, if not all, are quite common I am sure. One appears to have the pin, or whatever, missing on the back.....and it looks like the Newfoundland one looks to have had the little rings clipped from the attaching device.

    Thanks,
    Ron

The Newfoundland badge is, despite its size, actually a collar badge for the Royal Newfoundland Regiment (pre-1949/Confederation), and is the pattern worn through WWII. With the snipped lugs and what looks like glue residue on the back, someone prob. had it stuck on a board at one time. Nice collar though and these are not that common.

The wings & leaf looks like a type of RCAF sweetheart pin -- it's an RCAF lapel or sweetheart base under the leaf. Seen these before and not too collectible, I don't believe.

The Victoria Rifles is common as dirt, but that's a nice WWII example.

For the Palestine Police badge, you may want to cross-post to the British & Commonwealth Badge Forum. A couple of guys there really know this sort of stuff.

Thanks......I sort of figured that; however, is there a way to determine what time frame they are from; are the cadets like West Point or OCS people; are they infantry or what (South Staffordshire).......etc.? I know nothing much of Commonwealth things, and at almost 71 I am not going to start collecting military again I hope.......I was just curious as to what I had.

              Thanks,
              Ron

The cadets are a youth organization sponsored and administered by the canadian forces, but it is still a civi organization.

The 'South Staffs' [South Staffordshire Regiment] are a distinguished British infantry regiment. This badge, or variants of it were worn for at least a century until the regiment was swallowed up in the latest round of amalgamations in the British forces. The King's crown dates it to the reign of our dear queen's father - 1930's-1950's. Common but a nice clean example.

The 'trophy of arms' [not really a surise/sunset, though it looks like it] was worn by Australian troops in both World Wars, possibly only when they were serving outside Australia [can't recall exactly].

Thanks to all for the information on the badges. I really know nothing about them, or the others I have except what I have been told by you on the forum. I never really collected them....but his picked them up when I ran into them because I found them interesting, and they were our friends and allies.

I think I may do a small display when I get my room finished. I know they can't be worth much, but I still like them, and they were worn by people who helped us keep the freedoms we still have.......and they all played their parts no matter how "small" they were......all the parts added up to a very large job and favor for us. None should be forgotten, or some may have to play those "small" parts again.........and, in the words of a rather famous part American "this was their finest hour".............and it really was........all many gave up all the rest of their finest hours so we could have ours.

                      Thanks,
                      Ron

                          .

This Badge was for the Royal Newfoundland Regiment which was posted in Newfoundland as part of the Home Guard and actually under Canadian Army Command. It was responsible for guarding vital sites around the Island like Water supplies etc. They were also on Bell island and had a Crack at firing at a U boat on one occasion if I recall correctly. Their other duties were to provide replacements for the two Newfoundland units of the British Army overseas, the 166th Newfoundland Field Regt, RA and 59th Newfoundland Heavy Regt RA. Service in Newfoundland was considered overseas service for Canadian Troops and there was a U Boat and sabotage threat throughout. If there had been the reason for a defense and or defense and withdrawal action due to an actual invasion, there were big plans planned which would have included them. To the best of my knowledge they still wore the Newfoundland cloth Shoulder titles but to be honest I don't know what else and its hard to find this info, which is why I started a thread. An interesting point is that this was a Volunteer unit. If you were not fit for Overseas service or for other reasons you could still be in this unit Voluntarily and undergo training and carry out duties, but only unpaid! That is pretty tough being a Soldier in the enviorment of Newfoundland with no pay, a lot of big Hearts were there i am sure!

                          Pete
