      But Not

Cricket, Darts, Soccer, tiddlywinks, golf, tennis, not sure but prob fox hunting, drinking, sometimes wins a game of rugby say once every 100 years

Yes a good bit of commonwealth rivalry never hurt anyone as we always pull together when it counts

Could You please explain the word "Pommie"? It seems to be related to some rivalry within the Commonwealth?
I was told by an Aussie friend that it comes from Pomeranian, as they are yapping little nuisances

Thing is though, Rugby is a game played by all the fat blokes that couln't hack football. la-di-dah chinless wonders who play with an odd shaped ball.
I think the Aussies have a bit of trouble with the terminology on football because for some strange reason they want to pick it up and use their hands...
          (they're a strange bunch!)
They hate us so much that they inisist on having part of their flag dedicated to the Brits...

Correct - thats because all those mindless morons did not vote for a republic when they had the chance

But I agree I have a lot of Pommie mates, & when they sing Union Jack on the Aussie flag do - dah, do - dah I really have no answer & just take another swig of my beer

here you go for a good explanation of the word Pommie

Various theories about pom have been proposed, including the acronym POHM, standing for Prisoner of His Majesty, supposedly applied to the English prisoners exiled to Australia early in its colonial history. The most logical theory, however, explains the term as an example of rhyming slang, the argot of London s Cockney underworld. Rhyming slang evolved in the 18th century as a private language among thieves and con men to conceal their dealings from the prying ears of the police, and gradually spread throughout the working classes of the entire British Commonwealth, including Australia. The principle of rhyming slang is very simple: pick a word or phrase that rhymes with the word you wish to hide -- thus, apples and pears means stairs, and trouble and strife translates as wife.

Pom, it seems, is almost certainly a second-generation slang word derived from pomegranate, a rhyme with the Australian slang term jimmygrant. "Jimmygrant," it seems, was at one time Australian rhyming slang for immigrant, so "pom" involves a double rhyme. If this seems a lot of trouble to take to come up with a slang term for immigrant, hold onto your hat. My friend Terry tells me that Americans are known in Australia as septics, short for septic tanks. But don t get too riled up -- it s all just slightly tasteless rhyming slang for Yank.

Thank You very much for the explainations. We have a similiar rivalry between the different "tribes" of Germany. The Badener have problems with the Württemberger, none of the rest likes the Bavarians and wants to give them to Austria, everybody makes jokes about the Ostfriesen, the Westgermans have prejudices about (?) the Eastgermans and vice versa, and so on. But we have only one national team for football, which gives us at least something to feel united.

                GRRRRRRRRRRR

Rugby is a game played by men!
Football is a game played by soft, overpaid, whining girls with perms who aren't hard enough to play rugby.
Most 'professional' footballers wouldn't last 5 minutes in a game of rugby!
                There,rant over!
                Kind regards,

All commonwealth rivalry aside I got the helmet & I cant see any other markings, It has as the seller stated 1940 & what looks like II on the bits of metal where the chin strap attaches to the shell. it does have some sort of serial number stamped on the brim but that's all the marks I can see. Where would the nPz mark be or where would any other marks suppossed to be. The liner also is a puzzle it has what looks like black rubber under the 5 tongues. Is this correct I'm used to the German leather.

Also what is the difference in the colour with Aussie vs Kiwi. It looks dark in real life ??

Seriously Chris if it is a NZ lid & you want to trade no worries, & I'm not putting $hit on you or anything just as an Aussie getting into Aussie stuff I'd prefer it if it was ..well Aussie , but please come on that underarm bowling badge must be a fake. Trevor still has his & it's a treasured item in fact I think he is taking it to the jewelers to get it upgraded to "brilliants"

                      Hi Craig,

No worries about the wind up. Us Anzac's might take the piss out of each other but we stand together when it really matters...like when either of us are playing against England.

Now about the helmet. The nPz mark, if there, should be in the same place as the date and mark 2 stamp. Don't know if you can tell the country it comes from by its colour, never heard of that before. The liner is a new one on me as well. I am used to the standard cruciform padding under the adjusting “fingers” on a mark 2 but having a look at your photos you posted it looks more like a solid piece of rubber and I have not seen that before. This could be a latter modification though and would be interested to hear if any other member has seen this type of padding.

Its a bugger about my under-arm badge. The bloke that sold it to me assured me it was original it’s even marked TC on the back. Will have to see if I can get my money back.

                      Cheers
                      Chris

                        Thanks Mate

Can you post a pic of yours especialy the liner etc, mine does have this black rubber cushion & whilst I am not sure I would think this is not correct for a WW2 helmet. I'll have another look but I am sure this nPz mark is not there, only what has been stated II & 1940 on both metal "tabs" where the chistrap is attached to the shell.

Any Idea on This one ?

                          Hi All,
I just found this helmet, buried in a deceased estates shed, full of spiders, and well worn and rusted, but appeares intact and untampered with. The Only Markings i have found on it are what looks like a Q and 9?3 stamped under the front rim.

Check the liner itself for any markings.

I bought a tan painted helmet that was advertised as British. Upon receipt and inspection, I saw that it was South African 1943. Neat.

I bought a slouch hat that was advertised as Aussie. It ended up being British 1945.

I bought a Thompson buttstock, expecting a nice one for my gun. Found it had Canadian proof marks.

                            And now a little poem...........

                            Australia is a lovely land.
                            It's full of bonza blokes.
Sheilas, beer, and no one's queer,
                            except in pommie jokes.

                            Australians are a lovely lot.
                            They're God's own chosen race,
and if they see a fairy pom,
they'll bash him in the face.

                            Australia! Australia! Australia!
