First aid or medic helmet

I picked up this helmet on Long Island N.Y. a few years ago and have never posted it. I think it started life as a commonwealth helmet due to the chinstrap. What I am not sure of is the red cross marking; is it British, Canadian or possibly even some U.S (coastal watch unit?).

Hi,
It looks like HBH 1938 stamped on the inside rim. Harrison Bros.& Howson, so is British. As for the red cross, hard to tell how long it's been on there, could be 20-30 years, or could be WW2. It certainly would have a tale to tell, ending up in N.Y.
