is this a `new` new display?. i ask as i was in the iwm last year, and there`s already a big display of vc`s. very, very impressive.when you read the little note next to each medal, telling how the medal was earned, with a photo of the winner, what some of these men did bordered on the insane!.

Actually, there were three who were awarded the VC twice; Arthur Martin-Leake, Noel Chavasse, and Charles Upham.

I believe Lord Ashcroft bought Noel Chavasse's VC for 1.5 million, can't remember if pounds sterling or dollars. Not that it matters at that level!

I would say USD.
He has been accused of putting financial pressure
on Families or Owners in order to acquire that is for sure.
It has apparently been his ambition to collect VCs since a kid.
Comes of a Ranking Military family.
The Russian cannon source of bronze is according to him
of little to no merit now as the cannon are long gone.

The Chavasse grouping sold for £1.5 Million Stirling circa November 2009.

It comprised the following.

• Victoria Cross & Bar
• Military Cross
• 1914 Star + clasp "5th Aug-22nd Nov 1914"
• British War Medal
• Victory Medal + MiD Oakleaf

I simply cannot articulate the heroism displayed by this man. The English language lacks enough superlatives to adequately honour him.

Quite true, indeed. I suggest that anyone with any interest at all in decorations for valour read his VC citations.
