UPDATED RESEARCH on Aurthur Bowles since original Posting:

Arthur was born at Chelmsford, Essex and enlisted in the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade on 27 December 1870 a labourer by trade. Arthur is shown present in the regiment when the 2nd Battalion embark for the Gold Coast in October 1873 and is present when they return to Winchester in March 1874.
The 2nd Battalion are show in Gibraltar in 1879 when Arthur is shown returned to the depot on 11 May 1879 and is shown purchasing his discharge for £3 on 14 April 1882.

Ironically-the Nigerian forces used flintlocks that were sold to them by the Brits. and fired shells and small pebbles as bullets. One chap was shot with a Brown Bess (he took it off the dead warrior) that had been issued and carried at Waterloo!
