Two parts of the same "note" that was in the Archive Folder. Not sure what it says as the writing is very hard to make out.

I suspect it would be very hard to find a better example . Super patina and I love the politically incorrect way the General on horseback is pointing down at the defeated enemy . Rob

I wonder if he was really 18, or just lying to get in the army...

The art of the Victorian medal is simply unsurpassed.

I recall a horror story related by Ed Haynes a number or years ago of Indian medals being melted down in a pot before his very eyes....

When you observe the feeding frenzy of unattributed, unresearchable TR trinkets and the insane prices paid for them you really do have to shake your head.

Items such as these talk to you from ages past.

                            Always a delight to view.

Lovely lovely medal. The Victorian engravers realyy did know their stuff!

The 'retreat in chaos' of the 9th is alluded to in a Kipling poem about British regiments scrapping in bars: "The called us Dlehi Rebels and we called them Fours About..."
A few of the Connaughts actually did 'mutiny' in Delhi after some truly awful treatment by higher ups and, of course, 'Fours About' was the command to countermarch a column of cavalry.

There was also a very funny little book I found years ago called "The Chillian Club" - named for the club the officers of the 9th formed after being shunned in all the proper ones. The back read "For all those who always wanted to see the Gurkhas used for riot control in Trafalgar Square." and details a bunch of very aged retired officers doing their bit for Briatain by 'offing' bolshie labour unionists, visiting South African clerics and other such liberal trash. Very very non PC but funny as H**l and, sadly, probably out of print for decades.

                              But I digress!

Thanks for then comments guys. Yes ... this area of collecting opens up so much history. More than just a blank piece of medal "maybe" worn by such and such or so and so.

Robb, I agree. In this PC world now days we need to respect the enemy like comrades in arms. Heaven forbid we show them no compassion, that would be the ultimate sin.
