    Dutch-Austrialian Vietnam Veteran Grouping

Today I had a visit from a Warrant Officer of the Dutch Marines. Six months ago I had met him and he had found out during our conversation that I collect Militaria specifically WW2 and that I was a Vietnam Veteran. He mentioned to me that a Dutch school friend and his family had immigrated to Australia. He further told me that his old school friend had joined the Australian Army and served in some heavy combat in Vietnam. His friend conveyed to him that he experienced flashbacks from his experiences in Vietnam. This Warrant Officer and his wife actually witnessed one of his flashbacks which shocked them.

Anyway his friend which I shall not mention as he is apparently still alive and living in Perth, Australia gave him his medals, insignia and other bits and pieces to include some books that were no longer important to him. The Warrant Officer asked me if I was interested in these items as he had no interest at all in keeping them....he stated they were just collecting dust and that he was being pressured by his wife to get rid of the stuff. I had no clue as to what Branch of service this Vietnam Veteran had served in the Australian Army.

Today I was presented with a bag full of items of insignia, medal bar and four books. I have not verified that all this is in fact Officially belongs to this Australian Vietnam veteran and I only have the word and story from the Dutch Warrant Officer. Here is a photo of a good portion of the items given to me. You will notice that much of it is SAS and Special Forces related.

    Mr.Petz,

the Australian Government has a comprehensive, freely available database of those who served. Cross checking the medals with the insignia should prove fairly simple especially with a service number.

Send me a PM for details if you wish.

      Patrick,

I don't have a service number but do have a name. I will send you a PM. Cheers! Bill

Check the rim of the Vietnam Medal - that's the one with the Queen's head.

          Tony,

A friend of mine already advised me to check the rim where apparently the service number would be located.....unfortunately there is nothing on any of the medals. Cheers

They look like replicas unfortunately. Issue gongs will have the name and service number on the rim

It's difficult to tell with modern Aussie issues, but after more than an initial cursory glance at the image I agree: copies.

                Gents,

As I understand it the consensus is they are copies. I'm just wondering maybe that the Australian Vietnam Vet may have purchased these for display only but they appear to be well made...allthough unmarked with a service number. I'm providing better scans as my digital camera is crap.

There is no problem with them, plenty of guys have replica sets made to wear on events rather than their originals.
