RFA flag ???

Flag appears to be a pre-1970 RFA ensign, used on Admiralty owned naval
auxiliaries, called a Transport Ensign of Royal Fleet Auxiliaries (RFA). In 1968
HM Queen Elizabeth II approved this blue ensign design variation for the RFA
Service; a Blue Ensign defaced with a vertical yellow anchor, introduced for
use on 16 June 1969. In May 1970 the RN Director of Marine Services, introduced
another ensign with two wavy yellow lines below a horizontal anchor, it was called
the Royal Maritime Auxiliary Ensign.

As you can see from the markings on the hoist it is a Royal Fleet Auxiliary Ensign.

The 848 is not an official form of "defacing", the anchor is. So it follows that it's not an official ensign. RFA pennant numbers don't go as far as the 800s so it rules out an RFA anyway.

My best bet would be something to do with 847 NAS which was formed from 848 NAS personnel specifically for the Falklands. They flew Wessex Mk5 helos.

They embarked on the "Atlantic Causeway" and the RFA Engadine, the latter may well be the missing RFA link.

847 has now been reformed at RNAS Yeovilton, an enquiry to the FAA museum curator may yield some better info.

flag was used in the 1982 Falklands War IMO, based on these historical facts.

You're getting your flags a bit mixed up there. The RFA ensign shown by the OP is the current and only RFA ensign.

The ensign you describe with the two wavy lines was the RMAS ensign, no connection to the RFA and now defunct, obsolete, gone.

You caught me before I corrected/deleted my previous post conclusion.
I've always been amazed at the number of badges used on UK ensigns.
However, soldier trooped flags (colours) are my main collecting interest.

Hi Liam, no history as it all came from a guy who got it doing a house clearance, all this merchant seaman gear came with it,cant find yet any mention of falklands but his handwriting is hard to read, its a shame really its some guys life in that box including old love letters etc ,he would have been in his early forties at time of falklands conflict,rgds Dave

Since my earlier post I've found that 848 NAS were in the Falklands with 11 Wessex HU5 embarked on RFAs Olna, Regent and SS Atlantic Conveyor.

If his discharge book is amongst your items it may tell which ship he was on during the Falklands war.
