    indian pith, help?

    Hi all,
I bought this recently and think it is a 'india' pattern pith, of the same type as one used during the 1930's & 40's. Can anyone tell me when this one would have been made? I assume it is post war, as the interior is lined with plastic, though plastic was around during the 30/40's, but I don't know.
Behind the plastic is a paper layer, and behind that is the lining of the dome, which is made from sacks/labels from a fabric manufacturers, which is clearly from India.
The grommets/vents appear to have been recycled from something with a trade mark, as one clearly shows, IMO, part of the word mark.

Any help on dating this pith would be greatly appreciated.

As an after thought, it was purchased from Austria, if this has any relevance.

    Thanks, JerryB

This appears to be a commercial/civilian model, possibly as late as the 1990s! These are still around, and made pretty much like they have been for decades.

This is the "Bombay Bowler" pattern. The military did use these in WWII as the Wolseley was taken out of service. But this appears to have no military connection at all.

I could bet that this helmet isn't cork. If you took it apart (which I don't recommend), it would probably be a wicker frame with a combination of sola pith (hence the term pith helmet) and newspaper. Some of this can be very interesting. I've seen helmets torn open from age and you can see newspapers dated from when it was made.

Pretty much as I thought. Thanks Peter for your knowledge on this.
