Denison smock

Hi all, save for the label, is there a difference between a war period second patern denison smock and an immediatly post war denison smock?

I used to own a 46 dated smock many years ago , and from what I can remember the 46 pattern is indeed slightly different .

hi, the poppers were chrome backed, as apposed to the ww2 ones which were brass.

Apart from the Newey poppers I believe they were the same pattern post war,I have always gone on the fact that if chrome is used then they are not war time.

No difference

There was a 1948 dated smock on e-bay a while ago and I have seen smocks dated from 1946 that have no difference what- so- ever. The chrome snaps do not become universal until the 1950's. In other words, some manufacturers continued to use the wartime hardware up to the late 1940's. The camo pattern is the same as that used in late 1945.

Correct! Postwar second patterns were still made with brass neweys for a while,so there is no way to date one that has no readable label!

Yes, it is not so easy, unfortunately. I had a 1946 dated smock in my hands a while ago and it looked exactly the same as a WW2 period smock. I was more thinking about some small details, e.g. size of the pockets, addition of something...

I read that some makers changed the camouflage pattern as from 1947 but not all of them... so indeed you can find 1948 smocks looking alike as a 1944 one.
