What about this G&S para helmet?

The helmet is good save for the replaced (?) bolt at the rear. As for the markings, who knows what they are?

Who knows? Its been there a long time. Helmet is a long time on marktplaats. I think if the decal wasn`t there it would be sold a long time ago.

Not sure why the markings would detract from the helmet? Might be worth some research. It is not commonly known that other units wore para helmets. Don't ask me why? However at the LAC here in Ottawa there are a few pictures showing para helmets being worn by Canadian infantry. A member of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles for example.

I have no clue if there is any relation between Irish units and the airborne? However I would not dismiss the markings without some further research.

Simply because no one knows what the the sign is, if it were a known flash it would have sold straight away. I'm sure it is ok, certainly looks like it's been there a long time, but like you say, needs some research.

I know Marcus Cotton was watching this helmet the first time it appeared on e-bay. He was keen to contact whoever won it. It never reached it's reserve. I guess the seller attaches a high value to the markings, because the bidding reached about £1000.

I think it looks like a shamrock.

Hi Gary

Thanks for posting that. I meant if there were any units/subunits that had some sort of Irish lineage that would result in such a marking. I suppose it is not beyond the realm that some individual added his own private marking. Not sure what the fallout would be but possible. I just don't see the sign detracting a lot from the helmet as a whole because a net would hide it nicely if it was a post war addition. Ya, maybe Marcus knows something we don't!
