    Zulu war medal

I have just been offered this Zulu war and Boer war medals. Not being into that I have no idea of the value of the medals. Can anybody please give me an indication of what it is wort, so that I can pay a decent price.

The Zulu war medal is to a A Coetze from the Albert Burgers Commando. The boer war is for a Mr Someone and has no bars. I know the pictures are not the greatest, but if somebody is interested let me know, I can buy them and pass them on . If anyone is interested and the guy does not want to much, I can get better pictures. Jacques

        Medals

        Jacques,
I am at a loss as to what these are worth, but if you find out and can get them cheaply, I'd like to get them from you. Always wanted something from that time period.
        Thanks,
        Leroy

          Jacques,
My most recent "Medal Yearbook" is the 2006 issue, which lists the South Africa medal, with clasp 1877-78, named to a colonial unit, at 300-350 pounds. I would add approximately 20% or so to that amount.
For the Queen's South Africa medal, no clasp, named to another "colonial", the price is shown at 75-85 pounds; again, I would add about 20 % to that figure. QSA medals without clasps aren't that common; ideally some research into the recipient would be warranted. Any clasps awarded could raise the value significantly.

I have the 09 Yearbook and theres you all thinking I`m a skin flint

The QSA is worth 60 - 80 pounds....more on that in a bit.

The South Africa medal with that clasp to Colonial troops which this is only 350 - 400 pounds.

Sometimes the medals to Mr's can be interesting as their names some times appear in the Times Online.

I`ll sign off now........Ive given one of my best secrets away here already today!

Guys, thank you for the information. It corrolates with my research. The dealer is asking way to much, a typical SA militaria dealer thing. Jacques

How can you put a price on any British Medal without knowing the full name and Regiment etc?

Could be worth $1000's if it's a rare one ... then again ...

Darrell the Medals Yearbook is only a 'guide'. A guide which all Medal Dealers seam to follow. The lower end of the price scale is for those units which are not so well collected and the higher end for those which are well collected. The prices are collated from medals sold during the previous year at auction.....so they arent just made up.

Your right the medal might be to Queen Victoria's distant cousin so could be worth thousands but I doubt it. QSA's to civilians are incredibly hard to research at the NA which is why they are worth so little. The large majority of medals to civilians (excluding surgeons) dont have bars which makes them less desirable unless they are to female nurses.

In the case of jacquesf's medals I would assume the seller who is a dealer has already done the research. One of the reasons I prefer to buy my medals from anyone but the dealers so I can find out about the great things the reciepient did myself which is the joy of collecting British Medals.
