    7th Hampshires dog gauge badge original?

    Some one gave me this badge yesterday but having never seen a right one I can't tell if its right or wrong all opinions appreciated,thanks Roger

      I've never seen one either, so I'm no help, but I wondered at the description of this as "dog gauge". Is that the name of the device on the badge? (I would have called it a 'stirrup'.) Or the size or... ?

        I havent been inclined to comment because I dont know for sure.

        I`m afraid that I do not like the lug attachment on the left of the picture. It looks like a "big foot" lug which is commonly associated with reproductions. The reverse detail is also poor particulary on the base scroll........however this may be a feature of an original badge?

        If you have no luck here I would suggest the British Badge Forum........someone there will have an original to compare.

          The central design is a dog guage, if a dog could'nt get through the guage then it was considered large enough to be a threat to live stock / deer, & so claws were removed.

          Used in the New Forest, Hampshire.
