    General's cap buttons

Were British generals required to have General (sword/batton) buttons on post-war visor caps, or were regiment buttons the norm?

When you are a General, you are not "required" to do anything. Seriously though, most Generals would have the propper buttons, but of course could wear their former regimental ones if they so desired.

Yes, officer's of general rank wear both the authorized rank side buttons, or, as often seen, the side buttons of their former regiment or corps. I have a generals' dress cap with rank correct side buttons, but also a colonel/ brigadier service dress cap, with side buttons for the Coldstream Guards.
I have often viewed caps on Ebay from the seller "Hogspear", with regimental side buttons. He has sold a TON of British Militaria over the past few years, including some to me. Many of his caps have the original hat box, with the officer's name on it.
