Badge backings on cloth insignia.

Could a manufacturer decide what sort of backing he used for cloth insignia, depending on preference, availability etc? Or was that an integral part of a sealed pattern?
Also, can the type of backing be used to date a badge?

Luc most probably availability I would think backings on Airborne insignia such as para wings and glider badges come with different material especially on some earlier examples..

Good Question though I'm sure some one will have a better answer.

I agree with scott, probably due to availability. I've seen the same style of badge with different backings and no backing. It could depend on the maker and also the year of manufacture.
