Brittish WWII medical bag?

In my search for fieldmade (altered) medical regalia I came across this bag currently listed on Ebay.

Based on the WD -War Departement- with arrow I guess it's british right? As I'm mainly into german sanitäter items, I need your help...

So who can tell me more?

WWII or earlier? As it is WD marked, shouldn't there be a date of production as well?

If not medical, what was the original purpose of it?
