    Hi there , ( hello Slim )
thought i would show this picture to help you with your display .

Picture shows a Royal marine in Malta around 1974 . In answer to your question it clearly shows how the sleeping bag was fixed with two buckle straps to the top side of the large pack , the sleeping bag design in its self was quite a leap forward in military equipment when they were first issued but because they were filled with duck down feathers they were near useless if they got a good soaking ( even a synthetic bag gives off some warmth when soaked )

The helmet is shown fixed to the front of the large pack again with two straps that cross over , with the shovel covered in a sand bag ,this hangs down from a special fixing on the flap of the large pack , due to the british armies realisation that the world war two style O8 pattern was out dated in modern warfare the shovel was re introduced infact the 58 webbing system had the capacity to carry both a pick and shovel.

The water bottle was carried in the small pouch with the buckle strap closer , with the water bottle in first and black cup on top ,quite simply the biggest load of rubbish the army ever issue , the bottle it self was fine but the cup had to be removed first before you could get to the bottle for a drink thats ofcourse if you could even get the bottle out ,
as the pouch was only just big enough when dry ,when wet it was an absolute bugger to get out and the buckle fastner was near impossible to open with cold wet numb fingers ,
the first generation of water bottle pouch had a twist opener that was far better ,this was a highly prized item in its own right as a spare one made an excellent untillity pouch for first aid kit or spare rations etc .

when ever possible and dependind on unit S.O.P`s the old 44 pattern waterbottle and pouch was obtained and used , far far better , a metal water bottle that could be heated if your water froze and had a great metal mug that could double as a mess tin if need be .

In the picture the respirator case made from butyl laminate like the issue begens is worn in the correct ` alert` position on the chest , i understand the respirator and N.B.C over suit was designed seperate or as an after thought and was not originally to be worn on the belt or the suit rolled in to the poncho ` bum roll` holder ,the bum roll was intended just for the poncho and pick head ,and is a complete sod to try and roll it back up in to the holder when its wet ,the suit is wet , your wet and its 3 oclock in the morning ,pitch black in a forestry block at otterburn !
hope this helps comments welcome ,ta Michael.
