Well everyone, I've returned from surgery to find this little beauty on my doorstep! Of course, it's another piece of RAF headgear!
This one is a government issue Wartime Warrant Officer's peaked cap. Typical British construction without the contrast white stitching (which was indeed a variation). As can be seen, the cap has aged nicely, with a graceful saddle shape akin to a TR visored cap. The leather bill is rippled a bit, but the leather has not begun to crack (and with the proper storage, it won't!)
The interior is typical of officer quality (although WOs were SNCO's!), with an adjustable sweatband (by means of a red ribbon drawstring). The cap is marked size 6 5/8 and stamped with the Broadarrow as well as the initials R.H.
The most interesting part of this cap is the liner. It's lined as a regular cap, but it has an added feature. There is a celluloid disc inside that creates a barrier between the wearer and the top of the cap, but it's totally removable. I've never encountered this in an RAF cap before. Stitched in yes, removeable? no.
Perhaps I should shut up now and show the pictures? Yes I think so. Keep an eye out for my upcoming RAAF peaked cap which I'll be posting soon!
Cheers!
