    Probably

I don't think the number (and the way it has been applied - to view when hung up) is a military service helmet.

The helmet was probably in service with a factory or some similar civil defence unit.
The helmets would have been hung up with gasmasks on corresponding numbered hooks, ready to be picked up in an "emergency".

These numbers are usually on Auxilliary or National Fire Service helmets, normally with the AFS or NFS decal above, I believe they are station numbers and are WW2 period

It's a NFS area number. You should be able to look up which one on the internet.
