Ww1 Uvf Armbands Lot.

Hi All,
I Was Given These Old Uvf Armbands And Badges By A Workmate Who Had Them In His Family Since He Could Remember.i Brought Them To A Local Mitiar Dealer.he Offered Me Quite Alot Of Money For Them.i Need To Know A Bit About Them.any Help Appreciated.

You could try taking them to the 'Somme Heritage Centre', outside Newtownards, to see if anyone there knows about them.
You could also try the 'Ulster Society'...an ex girlfriend of mine used to work there, interviewing veterans of the 36th. They were based in Lurgan then (about 20 years ago) but I think they are now in Belfast.

I found this picture on the net of an armband of similar construction, but there was no information about it...

Armbands

Hi Jon
The Armbands are origional Home Rule period Medical Armbands named to the 2nd South Down Battalion of the Ulster Volunteer Force.The Uvf of the period as i am sure you know was highly organised and disciplined.My own Grandfather was a member of the 1st Armagh Battalion of the Uvf and upon the outbreak of WW1 he became a member of the 9th Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers. He survived the horrors of the Somme and luckily survived the war but like many old soldiers never talked of his experiences.The only origional Uvf period item i have belonging to him is his Brass Badge that was numbered and every member had.It is numbered B 1887 as County Antrim has the prefix A on their badges.These badges can fetch from £60 uk pounds upwards .I have one to the Signal and Dispatch Riders and is worth over £300 quid. Remember what a dealer offers is usually below what the items are worth .The South Belfast Regt Armband that one of the other members featured is the most common around today of all the Old Uvf Regiments and Battalions. The ones you have would fetch a reasonable price.Unsure what the crossed rifles is but it looks WW1 period and is probably a shooting award of some sort.
Origional Uvf items from the home rule period are very collectable and there is many big collectors out there alaways looking for these items.

Follow this link to a great site with much information on the origional Uvf of 1912 .I know the author very well and he is dedicated to preserving this very important part of British and Irish History.Among the many items you will find the origional flags of the Btns that your armbands belonged to. Sadly many people misrepresent the present day with the past which we should not allow to happen.Here is the link. http://www.uvf.info .Also Jon one other place of interest might be the public records office online in Belfast as you might find your families or your wifes family signature on the web if they signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912. (That is assuming your local and married) Remember nearly everyone in Ulster signed it at this time and the Public records have placed it online for all to read.

Very nice arm bands. I had a few U.S. civil defense arm bands given to me a few years ago. The best items sometimes come to us from our friends or mates (as you say across the water).
