Denison smock on E Stand - Help needed

    Hi Guys

I am interested in the Denison smock being offered o the E-Stand by Mons1914

I would really appreciate some comments on it. I mainly collect German and US Airborne WW2 so I am way out of my depth on this one.

It would be a nice addition to my Normandy display.

    Please comment on this guys

    My best and thanks

I would ask if the tail/crotch strap is still present. THey were often removed.

If missing, it does detract form the piece in my opinion.

        Hi James!
I would probably be a player on the smock if the US dollar wasn't so weak against the Pound and the Euro. The colors are vibrant and it hasn't been converted to a full zip, which I feel drives the value down significantly. I agree whole-heartedly with Gary though, you need to see if the tail is still present. They were often times removed.

I think Mons is clear that this is a Royal Marine Commando Brigade smock. On the photos I have of the 1st crossing the Rhine the flap appears to be cut off.

Nice original example with correct brass newey poppers, correct swift zip, strong colours has one little hole to front. interestingly I found a faded service number under the bottom left pocket which an RM number, so possibly Commando issue.Officer rank pips have been removed

Actually, he's pretty clear that it's possibly RM issue.

The person interested in buying it wants to do a Normandy airborne display, so the link to the RM would not likely be too important. Not many of the airborne guys removed the crotch strap, as it was certainly useful to have on the drop.

              Hi Guys

Thanks very much for the comments. They are appreciated and valued. I have asked Mons1914 about the 'tail' so I expect he'll reply soon.

Just a comment on the tail from yellow. Just for me to understand clearly. Yellow, I understand that in the photos you have in your posession of the first crossing of the Rhine these tails have been removed. Is this what you mean ? How about posting a pic or two. I think it would be great !

I would think it would be quite uncomfortable running around the battlefield with something strapped snugly around your crotch - perhaps this is why they were removed.

              Cheers

They didn't have to. The tail piece was only worn in that manner for jumping, for the rest of the time it was fixed up behind the smock by two press studs ( at least on these 2nd patterns ).
Of course the 1st patterns were different . They had no means of securing the tails , so the were either cut-off ( against the rules !) , "crotched-up", or more usually left to dangle !

                Regards,
                Steve

Good smock, good price and good seller.

The flap may have had some purpose for paras, but for glidertrained infantry it was completely useless and they often cut it off.

This pattern is not very typical for a Normandy display.

                    Cheers, Luc

The serial number appears to be:

                            PO X/344

SJT. ............ cannot read the rest.

I have in my collection a group of medals to X / 251.........his medals are 39/45 Star, F&G Star and War medal.

A letter to the Commando association would probably reveal who wore this smock. So in theory its better than an un-named example.
