    Fairbain Sykes.....which type?

Hi Guys.....found a lot of years ago...here in Tuscany....handle modified (probably for civilian use).....the question:

is this Fairbain a second type or a third one?

Confuse me the 42 date stamped on it.....

    thanks to all in advance

    Alessio

It has the early ish type blade seams to be a second pattern.

Hi Alessio, wood handles were fitted to wartime blades. It seems some makers had surplus blades and wanted to use them up. Some say they were a cheaper option private purchase item, others say they were made for use in the Far East.

I cannot really comment on yours, other that to say it looks like it has been on there a long time.

                Cheers, Ade.

Heres a pic of a standard 2nd pattern.

                            Hi Alessio,
From the mark on the crossguard it is most likely to have come from a 2nd Patt.

Mons, has your 2nd been apart?? Unusual to see the B2 on the underside of the crossguard
                            Regards

                              Irv,

Yes the stamp is on the wrong side but all looks fine, straight from the family of a veteran. did they stamp them after assembly or was the cross guard already stampd before assembly?
