    A British Insignia Question

I'm hoping that someone can help me out here.

I have a 1950's era red tunic for a musian(?) in the Coldsteam Guards. It has the decorative "tape" across the chest and on the sleeves. It has the blue and white fringed "nests" on the shoulders.

    My question is this:

From an examination of the sleeve it looks like there were sergeant's stripes on it at one time. Were they worn on both sleeves or one? And does anyone have a photo of what it would look like ? I would like to try to aquire one (or, if two were worn, then two) to restore the tunic.

It's really impressive as it is, but I would like to get the chevron(s) if at all possible.

    Thanks !

    Just the one sleeve Bill.

Sergeants would be gold chevrons and Lance Sergeants and below would be white chevrons if I recall correctly.

You would have to know his history-a full sergeant wore Gold stripes a Lance-sergeant White a colour Sergeant Gold Stripes with a colour badge on the right arm only.

          Um...never mind, guys.

I'm sorry, I am getting some things out of storage for an estand sale in what I hope will be the near future. I knew that I had the tunic I described and I just found a photo of it on a dealer's website. I have borrowed the photo for use here. Obviously, this is a drummer's tunic, I suppose, and as such seems to have no space for cheverons at all. I must be thinking of another tunic that seems to have a space on the sleeve for cheverons.

I guess what I need is the belt shown here.

The stripes would overlay the decorative lace on the sleeve.

I'm really not conversant in these uniforms, but the buttons don't look like they are in pairs on this very site pic ???

The button structure looks more the Grenadier Guards being singly, specially on the cuffs you can see it.

Too specialised bandsman uniforms for me

                  Ah...Grenadier guards !

Well, as I said, I was going from memory here.

And now you know why I don't moderate the British militaria section.

I have to say, though, that the drummer's tunic has been quite beneficial. On a few occassions I have done militaria shows, and I place the tunic on a mannequin torso on my table. It's not for sale. But it can be seen from all the way across the hall. It's like a big red neon "Militaria" sign.

                  Thanks again, guys !
