They might not be that rare,but they do not turn up for sale that often and if they do there is a world full of collectors who want it.So pay the price or go without.As for decay,anything if stored improperly wil fall a part sooner or later.

Why is so rare a maroon beret???

Well put Jelle. Airborne berets are in demand and therefore they don't need to be a rarity to command high prices. My guess is that maroon berets are about as rare as black panzer caps, or SS M43s, or camouflaged M42 helmets. It seems that British airborne (and Commonwealth militaria in general) may finally be coming into its own amongst WWII collectors. So, who knows? Are airborne berets absurdly priced now, only to come down in value within the year? Or are they to go the way of panzer militaria and continue climbing to prices that will really make you weep?
