    Badge for 14th Rifles Canada

I'm not an active badge collector but ran across this one in a small antiques shop. It is for the 14th or Princess of Wales Own Rifles. I'm guessing it is a helmet or shako plate as it is rather large (3 1/8" x 3 1/2"). As I understand it, this badge was used from 1908 - 1920. Any comments welcomed.

Hi Garth, nice badge. The badge Bible (INSIGNES DE LA MILICE CANADIENNE - CANADIAN MILITIA BADGES PRE 1914 by Mazeas says it is a shoulder belt plate, the helmet plate being a maltese cross shape. There are specialists out there that can confirm this. I've learned to not trust Mazeas completely. Many I've seen are domed from use like they've been on a halmet rather than a shoulder belt. Also. there would normally be a backing plate along with the badge itself. This would ensure the bardge did not bend, then eventually break. I have a similar badge as your and I've seen them in silver (officers?). The badge is in the $150 - 250.00 range re value so nice score.

        Greg,
Thanks for your response. I'm not a metal badge guy so I put this one up on Ebay for a start of $50. I hope it finds a good home.
