    Wartime flying helmet?

    Hello,

Please can someone out there tell me what this is?

I think it's a flying helmet as it has holes in the leather under the flaps on the side, maybe for use with headphones?

Also been told it could be an old style motorbike helmet/hat.

Is it a military issue item?
There are no markings anywhere on it,not to say there weren't in the past.

    The presstuds are marked Newey.

It is sheepskin lined on the inside, and it also has a peak that can be fastened back with a presstud.

    Does anyone know for sure?

I have a few helmets of this type, two of them like yours. The others look alike but are different models, and no markings either.

The holes under the flaps are not for the headphones. I also have a late 1920´s flying helmet with headphones and the space for them is much bigger and complex than just a few holes.

About your helmet and mine, I can´t be sure if they were motorbike, automobile or flying hats. I have somewhere two pairs of cased goggles. One says "AERO-MOTORGOGGLES" and the other one is in french "LUNETTE, SPORT - TERRESTRE & AERIEN". I would trasnlate as (SPECTACLES, SPORTS -TERRESTRIAL & AIR).

So in those days I guess the type of helmet you have could have been used in many occasions. Who knows. Flying, on a motorbike, an automobile, or even in the shower

I hope to find out one day that all of them were used as flying helmet by RFC.

                Regards,
                Adolph.

I also have a helmet of near identical design. I would like to think that it was used by an RFC pilot but without provenance one will never be sure.
