    What is this

Looks like something to hold bayonet or commando dagger, but I'm not sure.
It also looks to be both US and British made.
Is it war or post war?

My immediate thoughts exactly. Pattern 58 Bayonet Frog.

Having said this, one of my collecting aeras is Pattern 37 gear. Pattern 58 web gear is not really my area.

It looks like a US bit of kit that has been attached to a piece of 1944 pattern webbing.

Jaegermeister... I've only ever seen one of these previous to your posting, so I cannot be 100% sure if my identification will be the right one. My forte is WW.1 Allied bayonets.. but heres my guess.

Its certainly an allied item, not WW.1 but it could have just scraped into WW.2. I don't think its for the British pattern 1958 webbing due to fact the bayonet frog was an integral fitting on the side of the left ammo pouch. I would aim for it being of Canadian origin!

Someone out there will get spot on!

I seem to remember in the past seeing a water bottle carrier that had the same type of fittings, I always thought that was '44 patt.

Yep. '58 bayonet frog was just a loop sewn to the left side (as worn) of the left hand pouch, the Energa (or better use as a KFS pouch being sewn to the right pouch.
