    Sten Baynonet frog (Value)

Hi There, I have been offered this sten bayonet frog by a local collector friend and we are struggling to find what price to place on it as neither of us have seen another for sale recently.

    All opinions welcome.

Hi Greg, sorry I have not seen any real ones for sale either. If no one else has, you are down to paying what you feel comfortable with. In situations like this I always think what would I pay if I saw one at a show?

      Cheers, Ade.

Thanks Ade, I understand what your saying, I gather these are quite hard to come by and have been faked. All though this one appears to be unissued I think its good but are the fakes of these this good.

Hi Greg, I too think these are good. I cannot recall ever seeing a fake with the additional "AA" markings?

          Cheers, Ade.

This is a picture of a replica I have on my pc for reference:

I have seen an original for sale a few months back made by A.C. in 1943 (with aa stampings) and it appears to be identical to yours. I can't remember the exact price, but it was quite considerable.

              Hello Greg,

I've seen several genuine examples of this frog for sale over the past ten years, and quite recently a substantial number of repo's. These frogs are quite rare now, so the 'get-rich-quick' brigade are turning them out in ever increasing numbers.

The rarety value for the genuine contempary item is as that for the Enfield '08' equipment bayo frog. So be prepared to pay a similar price. saying that, prices are fairly decent at the moment. Approx 50.00 GBP will get you a very sound example with approx 45.00 GBP for a derelict. I personaly would give a top price of 65.00 GBP for your illustrated item...... if it were bonafide, the biz, the real deal!.

I hope the above has helped.

Seph, I don't have production numbers but these are far rarer than '08 pattern frogs (which must have been made in millions). I must have seen one or two of these in the last 5 years that I'm sure were real, and they were no way near as little as £50.

Saying that, if you can find me a real one for that price, just let me know!

                Jack.

Thanks Seth and Jack for your oppinions, I guess now what I need to determine is, is this an original! It is unissued/mint and is coming out of a long established collection and appears to match both in colour and weave to other ww2 period webbing. The stampings I feel have a "period" look about them and as Ade mentions he's never seen "AA" markings on fakes. The Bronze clip has darkened with age. I personally like what I see but have never had another one to compare. The seller is a long time respected collector and book author on the subject and is addament it is original.

From what you guys see from the front and reverse pic, is there any part that looks in the slightest questionable. Appreciate all oppinions.

                  Regards Greg

                    Greg,
Thanks for saying nice things about me. Remind me to give you a big warm fuzzy hug the next time you come around.
I am flattered that I am respected. You should have seen me in my youth.
The beauty of this frog is that you can see and touch it, which makes a huge difference when doing deals over the internet from 12,000 miles. I live around the corner. You can get a 'feel' for the collector and the collection that the item comes from.
                    The frog is genuine.,
