MKII helmet liner top pad shape

Hi, I have noticed that most liner top pads are X-shaped whereas some are round. What's the significance of that? Early, late? Defence branch/civil defence?

    Thanks in advance,

    Anders,
The "round" type pad was the slightly earlier design, and you normally find these in helmets that are dated up till and including 1939.
.. The "cross" type basically was the next pattern and was used from 1939 onwards through the war.
